2018 Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon
California – Paso Robles

Winemaker Notes: The wine shows notes of black cherry, chocolate, and vanilla. Flavors of blackberry and sweet spice emerge on the palate, bolstered by a firm acidity, velvety tannin’s, and a long finish.

91 Point Wine Enthusiast: Deep and lush aromas of candied blueberry and black cherry meet with chocolate cake, light brown spices and a touch of beef jerky on the nose of this judiciously priced wine. Though a tad light on the palate at first, it has an energetic and spicy acidity that carries forth flavors of tobacco and black fruit.

2018 Lagar Da Condessa Albarino Spain – Rias Baixas

Wine Spectator 90 – Briny and blanched almond notes play off peach, lime and tarragon flavors in this firm, focused white. Has a polished texture and a spicy finish. Albarino. Drink now through 2021. 2,300 cases made.

James Suckling 90 – Ripe and gently complex with a layer of nutty barrel ferment-influence adding nougat and baking spices. The palate has rich peach fruits. A thick finish. Drink now.

This week we are focusing on the nectar of the hop. New Planet Beer Seclusion IPA has a prominent hop profile, and malt balance. It does have a twist though, it is crafted to remove gluten! Since it is not prominently displayed on the label many don’t know this, and the taste certainly doesn’t give it away.

2014 Domain Maestracci Corse Calvi E Prove Roughe
France – Corsica

94 Point Wine & Spirits: Roger Maestracci founded this estate in 1945, choosing a granite plateau on the northwest end of the island. Today, it’s run by his son-in-law’s daughter, Camille-Anaïs Raoust, who blends E Prove from niellucciu, grenache, sciacarellu and syrah, aging it in stainless steel for a year and in oak casks for another. Those facts, however, don’t go far in explaining how this wine manages to feel so immediate and evocative, the notes of sassafras, salt and cedar conjuring up inland forests; the herbal sweetness speaking to the brush that grows between the rocks along the coast. There’s also the appealing tension between velvety berry fruit and gamey volatility, combining in an impression of genuine old-school aristocracy.

Bedrock Shebang Red Blend    California

Winemaker’s Notes: Sherman & Hooker Shebang is a project by Morgan Twain-Peterson, the son of Ravenswood founder Joel Peterson. Morgan grew up in the world of wine in California. In addition to this project, Morgan also produces tiny amounts of old vine, heirloom red and white blends, Pinot Noir, and Syrah under the Bedrock Wine Co. label. Also noteworthy: Morgan passed the prestigious Master of Wine exam and, upon successful completion of the dissertation, will become one of the less than thirty American Masters of Wine!

Winemaker Notes: The 2016 vintage of Intrinsic has a wonderful floral nose, complemented by aromas of cherry and leather. The flavors are layered with tones of blueberry jam, pomegranate and chocolate. The texture is rustic, yet silky, with a unique savory and inviting finish.

92 Points James Suckling: A red with lots of sweet-tobacco and currant aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, round and juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Harmonious and fine. Drink now.

Intrinsic Red Blend 2017
Washington – Columbia Valley

Winemaker’s Notes: This wine opens with refined notes of raspberry, white tea leaves, a hint of fresh mint and lavender. The flavors are layered with milk chocolate, fig reduction, dark plum and licorice root, and the texture is angular, yet sophisticated, with chocolate ganache details in the finish.

93 Point James Suckling: Each variety is fermented on the other’s skins in a twist of technique. The swagger here is palpable and the deep dark berries are laced with flowers and delivered in pure, unadulterated form. So good! A blend of 51% malbec and 49% cabernet franc.
